Abstract

The purpose of this study was to provide basic informations for helping to plan for concrete sexual education and to improve the quality of the Army medical health system.
The subjects in this study were a convenient sample of the 583 Private Sodiers selected froma military unit, a navy unit, and an air force unit located in Kang Won Do.
The date was collected by questionnaires through direct group survey method from April 8th to Apirl 14th in 1997, and analyzed by percentages, mean, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson¡¯s Correlation Coefficient with the SAS program.
The results of this study were as follows
The mean of the knowledge about human sexuality was 11.47. Age and educational background correlated directly to knowledge about sexuality. It was found that the older their age and higher the educational level they completed the higher their knowledge about sexuality(p<0.05. p<0.00l).
The score of the air force unit was the highest and the next highest was the military unit(p<0.05).
Subjects were lacking more in the knowledge of contraception and venereal disease than the others.
The mean of the attitude about human sexuality was 3214, the score of the military unit was the highest, and navy unit was the lowest(p<0.001). The higher educational background the higher the score(p<0.001). Significant differences in the job before enlisting(p<0.001).
Eight-five percent of them have had experiences of acquaintance with the other sex. 61.2% of them have experiences of sexual coitus. 41.20o of them experienced sexual coitus for first time in high school days. 17.2%(100 persons) of them have had experiences of unwanted pregnancy.
The cause of pregnancy was 74.0% uncontraception; 26.0% failed contraception.
A significant positive correlation between knowledge and Attitude about human Sexuality were found(p<0.01). The attitudes revealed negative correlation in having experiences before enlisting(p<0.01). 85.2% of them had ever been given sexual education at school. 65.60o of them had been given sexual education in high school. 5.4% of them were satisfied and 49.9% of them were not satisfied 14.95 of them had ever been given sexual education after enlisting. No less than 65.8% of them felt the necessity of sexual education after enlisting.
They were concerned about prevention and treatment of venereal disease, contraception, AIDS, the organs of generation.
Significant differences between the military unit, the navy unit, and the air force in sexual experiences after enlisting(p<0.001).
The navy unit had received the highest score in sexual experiences.
The navy unit had a higher standard of sexual education after enlisting than the others.
